What the job is
The second steward is the chief steward's deputy and the person who runs the interior floor day to day. On a 50m to 80m yacht with four to six interior crew, you organise the rota, lead service when the chief is with guests or doing paperwork, and step into the chief's role on days off and at handovers. You are still very much hands on, so expect to serve lunch, turn down cabins and polish glass alongside the team.
Your focus is usually service. You set tables to the owner's standard, plan themes with the chief, stock the bar and run breakfast, lunch, dinner and the steady flow of snacks and drinks in between. On many boats you also manage part of the inventory: linen, glassware, flowers, guest amenities and wine. You keep the stock sheets accurate so the chief can order before the next trip, and you log breakages and spend against budget.
Captains and chief stewards hire a second for reliability. They want someone who can train a new junior, handle a demanding guest calmly and keep standards up at 01:00 when the last guests go to bed. Most seconds have two to four seasons behind them, often on charter yachts. Do two strong seasons as second, show you can lead a team, and you are well placed to apply for chief steward roles on smaller yachts.

Questions crew ask
How much experience do I need to become a second steward?
Most yachts want two to four seasons as a steward or third steward, ideally with charter experience. You will need references showing you can lead service and train newer crew.
Is a second steward mostly service or housekeeping?
On most yachts the second leads service while the third or a housekeeping steward runs cabins and laundry. On smaller yachts you will do a share of everything.
How long until I can move up to chief steward?
Two solid seasons as second is typical. Many make the step first as chief steward on a smaller yacht with a team of two or three.
