What the job is

You own the guest activity programme. Before a trip you read the preference sheet, talk to the broker or owner's office and build a day by day plan: which beach club for lunch, which night is the white party, when the kids want the inflatable slide, who plays at the deck party. On board you turn that plan into bookings, timings and briefs for the deck, interior and galley teams, then you adjust it hourly when the weather or the guests change their minds.

Much of the work happens through other people. You book shore excursions, restaurants, DJs, musicians, magicians and florists through agents and local contacts. You agree tender runs with the Bosun, menus and themed food with the Head Chef, table settings and costumes with the Chief Steward, and sound and lighting with the AV/IT Officer. A good coordinator knows contacts in Saint Tropez, Mykonos, Antigua and the Maldives, and has a box of props, games and decorations ready to go.

You are also guest facing for long hours. You host games, quizzes, karaoke and film nights, look after children when there is no nanny, and keep an eye on who is bored or left out. The role is found mostly on larger charter yachts and on private yachts with big families or frequent parties. Between trips you help the interior with service and housekeeping, sort the props store, reconcile receipts with the Purser and refresh your supplier list.

What makes a good one

  • Event planning and logistics
  • Strong local supplier contacts
  • Confident hosting and presenting
  • Calm under last minute changes

Questions crew ask

Do I need yacht experience to get this job?

Most captains want at least one season in a yacht interior so you understand crew life, safety and service standards. Strong event, hotel or cruise ship entertainment experience can get you in on larger yachts, but you will still need your STCW and ENG1.

Will I help with normal interior work as well?

Yes, on most yachts. Between trips and on quiet days you help with service, housekeeping and laundry, and you are part of the safety and watch roster like any other crew member.

Is the role permanent or just for charters?

Both exist. Busy charter yachts often keep a coordinator for the whole season, while some private owners hire one per trip for big family holidays or parties.
