What the job is
You are the person on board who records the trip. On large private yachts and busy charter programmes, owners want a record of the family on the tender, the children's first dive, the birthday dinner on the sundeck. You shoot stills and video, fly the drone for aerials of the yacht at anchor, and get a selection edited and shared with guests within a day. Most of the time you work alongside the interior and deck teams rather than apart from them.
Discretion matters as much as the camera. Many owners are private people and every image is covered by a confidentiality agreement. You learn who wants to be photographed and who never does, and you read the mood of a lunch before you lift a lens. Some yachts also use you for the vessel itself: marketing shots for charter brochures, refit records, crew training footage and the occasional social media post the management company has approved.
On smaller vessels the role is often combined, so you may also work as a stewardess, deckhand or watersports crew between shoots. Kit care is a real part of the job. Salt, sand and humidity ruin cameras, so you clean, dry and back up everything every evening. You handle storage drives, keep a tidy archive for the owner and make sure nothing leaves the yacht without the captain's sign off.

A day in the life

- 06:30Shoot sunrise stills and a drone pass of the yacht at anchor before guests wake and before the deck crew start washing down.
- 08:00Crew breakfast, then a short meeting with the chief stew and bosun to check the day's plan and which guests are happy to be filmed.
- 09:30Film the breakfast table and children on the swim platform, keeping out of the service team's way.
- 11:00Ride the chase tender to cover jet skis, the seabob and a snorkel trip with a housed underwater camera.
- 13:30Back on board during lunch service, then rinse salt off every body and lens and charge batteries.
- 15:00Edit the morning into a two minute clip and a gallery of thirty selects, then pass it to the chief stew to share with the principal.
- 18:30Shoot sunset drinks on the sundeck and the beach dinner setup, working quietly with a fast prime lens and no flash.
- 21:30Back up all cards to two drives, log the files in the owner's archive and plan kit for tomorrow's island excursion.

Questions crew ask
Do I need yacht experience to get this job?
Not always, but it helps a lot. A strong portfolio gets you noticed, and a season as a stew or deckhand shows a captain you understand life on board and how to stay discreet.
Is it a full time job on one yacht?
On some very large private yachts it is permanent. More often it is trip based or seasonal, or combined with another role such as stewardess or watersports crew.
Can I use the photos in my own portfolio?
Usually not. You will sign a confidentiality agreement and the owner keeps the rights, so only use images the captain or management have approved in writing.
